Sometimes people object to evangelism as arrogant or intolerant. What gives anyone the right to try and change other people — often challenging thousands of years of tradition and culture? Who is good enough to tell other people that they should change the way that they're living their lives? And isn't that what we're doing when we evangelize?
It's important that we talk about these questions and the ethical implications of evangelism. In this session I want you to watch an interview with someone who has thought a lot about the ethics of evangelism, Dr Elmer John Thiessen. Then, I want you to read his blog post, "Biblical Guidelines for Ethical Evangelism," in which he includes 30 guidelines.
To complete this session email responses to the following prompts to me.
1. Summarize the main ideas that Dr Thiessen is expressing in the interview. Do you agree or disagree with him? Why?
2. Which five of the 30 guidelines are the most important to stress today? Explain why you have chosen to stress these five?
